Description du livre Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. This books illustrates the transition of Eastern Europe after Soviet dominance for decades. Established regimes and eternal truths crumbled, and photographers from the Bildenberg Agency "set out to explore this crucible of history, roaming the length and breadth of Central and Eastern Europe to keep pace with events", as the text on the back cover goes. The 89 colour photos, accompanied with captions by Alexander Smoltczyk and Pavel Kohout's essay "The Wild East; The Story of a Relapse and a Recovery", give an intriguing insight into the events that changed Eastern Europe as it gained its freedom in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Check playwright Pavel Kohout (b. 1928) is a co-founder of the human rights group Charter 77, and Alexander A. Smoltczyk (b. 1958 in Berlin) was at the time Eastern European correspondent for several German newspapers and magazines. Hanns Joachim Friedrichs (1927-1995), who wrote the afterword, was a celebrated German news presenter and foreign correspondent who was the first to televise the breaching of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. This is an important part of history told in an unusual and personal way. Translated from the German original book "Der Wilde Osten" (published 1991) by Karen Williams. 120 pages, format 27 x 23,8 cm. Very slight wear on the cover, otherwise in very fine condition.
