Sub-titled "Mineral Heritage in Australasia" this was the 18th monograph of the publishing Institute and arguably its most important as it is "An Illustrated History of Mining and Metallurgy in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea" whereas it predecessors mainly dealt with a specific aspect of these industries. This is a quality publication and the author was president of the Institute when the papers on which it is based were presented to branches in the countries covered. The first eight chapters relate to Australia's states and territories, three to the remaining countries. In the history all aspects of mining, from the great gold rushes of the 1800s, the search for other precious metals and the industrial minerals that are economically important, often vital, to the member countries. This excellent book will sit proudly among any collection of mining literature. 310 pages including index, lavishly illustrated throughout with photos, art, sketches, diagrams documents etc, plus maps showing important mining locations, pictorial e/papers. (Most illustrations b/w, some have colour tonings.) Brown hard covers with gilt spjne titles NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions.
