In early modern England, scenes of torture, murder, and infidelity were often graphically depicted on the stage. In this study, Burks (English, Ohio State U., Lima) examines the trope of violation in the theater of early modern England and explores the connections between these theatrical representations and the use of violation imagery in a range of other public and private discourses. Her analysis encompasses texts such as Shakespeare's Measure for Measure , Aphra Behn's The City Heiress , Arbella Stuart Seymour's letters, and Margaret Cavendish's fiction and drama.
