Dr Julie Smith is Head of the European Programme at theRoyal Institute of International Affairs, an Assistant Director ofStudies at the Centre of International Studies, Cambridge andFellow in Politics, Robinson College, Cambridge. She has publishedwidely on various aspects of European integration, including EUenlargement, democracy in Europe and elections to the EuropeanParliament and on transnational party politics.

Charles Jenkins leads a team of 12 at the EconomistIntelligence Unit (EIU) responsible for Country Reports and CountryForecasts which cover the politics, economies and businessenvironments of all countries of the the European Union as well asthe EU itself. He has a long experience as editor and author of EIUregular and special reports covering all EU countries and manyEuropean countries outside the EU as well as working for theFederal Trust, Centre for Reform, European League for EconomicCo–operation and other research bodies.
