Donna Marie Lynch Donna was born in Victoria, on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Colombia, a place she calls “paradise”. Despite the love of “her island” Donna’s passion for travel keeps her on the move as often as possible. She didn’t get off the Island until she was 16, but once she started she hasn’t stopped. The first trip to Europe, which was to be four months, ended up almost a year and after that two week vacations just never seemed to satisfy her need to explore the world. Five summers working as a poker, black jack and roulette dealer, in Dawson City, Yukon’s Diamond Tooth Gerties, financed trips to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and a safari to seven East African countries. Domestic life as a wife, step-mom and mom took over for a while, but the loss of her precious daughter Carly, at 10 months old and the end of her marriage put her back on the road again. A three month tour around South America and another four months in Europe in 2004 re-energized her passion for travel. Over the next two years, joined by her brother and then her sister she sailed on two Mediterranean cruises and this proved to make them a family of addicted travellers. Her most recent journey to 50 countries in 50 weeks, bringing her country count to 76 has just opened the flood gates and the dream of the “100th country” is next on the list. Donna’s first book, printed in 1992, titled, “I’m Bored” was an information guide for teenagers in Victoria. After having difficulty finding information for her teenage step-daughter, she decided to have the students of two high schools fill out surveys and then Donna did the research (prior to the internet) to produce a guide of all activities and resources for teens in her city. This was shortly after her daughter died and keeping busy with this project helped her through the grieving process. Although she says she will never really be “through” grieving for her daughter. Now her second book and the journey to provide the content has helped her with the grief from losing her mother, who she says was her rock and best friend. “50ish was a dream come true,” says Donna, who really did dream it first and then went out to make her dream a reality, travelling to 50 countries in 50 weeks, interviewing women in their 50s.
