Biographie de l'auteur :
Foreword written by HRH Prince Phillip who served in the action. At the outbreak of World War II, Prince Philip was still a Greek citizen, but it was decided he should continue to serve in the Royal Navy. His war got off to a slow start. In January 1940, he joined the battleship HMS Ramillies as a Midshipman and spent the following six months in the Indian Ocean, also serving on HMS Shropshire and Kent. In October 1940, Italy invaded Greece and Prince Philip became a combatant. In January 1941, he joined the battleship HMS Valiant in Alexandria. It was on board Valiant that the Prince became a participant in the night action off Cape Matapan, and was mentioned in despatches for his control of the midship searchlight. Edited by Dr Jane Harrold who is Deputy Curator of the Britannia Museum at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. She joined the College from the University of Warwick in 1997. Her PhD thesis was entitled State Building: The Case of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). It examined the evolution of CFSP and its implications for the future of European integration and state provision of security. Her teaching and research interests continue to include the evolution of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, in particular European Security and Defence Policy, contemporary security studies and twentieth century international and naval history. An enthusiastic supporter of European co-operation, Dr Harrold has presented papers at the Ecole Navale and for the Franco-British Lawyers' Symposium at the Ecole Militaire.
