Présentation de l'éditeur :
Among the rarest and most exciting classic cars are the supercharged Mercedes cars of the 1920s and 1930s, exemplified by the fire-breathing S, SS, SSK and SSKL models with their supercharged 7-litre engines, and the exceedingly glamorous, though softer and less stark, 500K and 540K cars which succeeded them in the mid-1930s. There were other models too, going back to 1923 and on to the construction of the last  mighty 770K in 1942. All of them, and the long, pioneering history of supercharging by Mercedes, are described here, including the cars designed by Ferdinand Porsche between 1924 and 1928 and the road-racing exploits of star drivers like Rudolf Carracciola. With 100 color photographs of surviving examples, and 150 black-and-white pictures from the archives, this book tells all about a remarkable family of motor cars, rarely ever seen yet universally admired.
Biographie de l'auteur :
James Taylor is a well-known writer in various automotive fields, having written around 80 books. Some have appeared in foreign languages and his own linguistic ability has seen him translate other books from German and French. His previous publications on the subject of Mercedes-Benz include Volumes 1-4 of Mercedes-Benz from 1945 in the Motor Racing Publications Collectors’ Guides series, Essential Mercedes Coupés, Cabriolets and Saloons 1953-67, Mercedes Cars of the 1990s and also Factory-Original Mercedes SL for Herridge & Sons. He is currently researching for a book on the supercharged Mercedes of the 1920s and ’30s. He lives in rural Oxfordshire with his wife, the younger two of his four children, and a classic Mercedes.
