En su arte mostró la misma inquietud, cubriendo el espectro completo del ukiyo-e japonés (la pinturas del mundo flotante), que es un género pictórico y de grabados realizados mediante xilografía en el que se encuadran desde estampas sueltas con paisajes y actores hasta libros eróticos, álbumes de grabados e ilustraciones para antologías poéticas y novelas históricas. Hokusai también realizó surimono, estampas de carácter privado que se imprimían en ocasiones especiales.
La serie de grabados de Hokusai Treinta y seis vistas del monte Fuji, publicados entre 1830 y 1834, es la obra más famosa del artista. Muestra el pico del monte elevándose en diferentes estaciones y desde diferentes puntos de vista, y supone la cima del grabado paisajista japonés. La serie La gran ola de Kanagawa, también conocida simplemente como La gran ola, muestra algunas de las imágenes del arte japonés más conocidas en todo el mundo.
