万鹗，字太鸿，又字雄飞，虢樊榭。先世本慈溪人，後遥居钱塘（今浙江杭州市）。万鹗家世平凡，出身寒苦，早年家住杭城东固，在寡母何孺人的督尊下，刻苦读书，积学自励。中康熙五十九年举人，但春闱报能，会试无功，终於未能求得一官半职。中年後结识了扬州盟商焉曰琯、马曰璐兄弟，受聘为师，在马氏小玲珑山馆断续居住了近三十年。乾隆十七年去世，年六十一。 万鹗是清代雍、乾之际最着名的诗人、词人和学者，以清空俊雅之笔，写幽深窈渺之境，其诗清幽娴雅，其词雅正清空。万鹗一生，并无以道统自居的宏大抱负，毕生心血，全在精心结撰的诗词创作和学术着作上。以一介布衣而为骚坛盟主，名震当时，流誊後世，这在文学史上是不多见的。 此次整理《万鹗集》，以《四部业刊》影印汪氏振绮堂刻本《樊榭山房全集》为底本。在上海古籍版《樊榭山房集》中《续集集外诗文》各一卷的基础上，补录了部分佚作。此外还收录了《南宋稚事诗》中万鹗所撰一百首及《东城杂记》两卷。又收集了重要的传记资料和缪荃豫所撰万鹗年谱，以作附录。
