Begonnen in 1968 met figuren en vormen in de stijl van Pop art en Hard edge, voerde Guy Baekelmans (°1940, Berchem) al snel vereenvoudigingen in vorm en kleur door. De evolutie naar het constructivisme ging in de eerste 20 jaar gepaard met een vroege interesse in de Oosterse filosofieën en leidde tot optische en dynamische wisselwerkingen geconstrueerd in het vierkant. Samen met o.a. P.R. de Poortere en Guy Vandenbranden stichtte Guy Baekelmans in 1972 het \"Internationaal Studiecentrum voor Constructieve Kunst\". Vanaf de jaren '80 neemt het belang van het driedimensionale toe met autonome, dikwijls monumentale sculpturen. Er volgt een vrijere expressie vanuit een boeddhistisch universalisme, wat Guy Baekelmans beschrijft als een opening naar onuitputtelijke referenties buiten tijd en ruimte, ontstaan door de interactie tussen de innerlijke microkosmos en de uiterlijke macrokosmos, ondeelbaar en in totale symbiose. De publicatie, geschreven door E. Van Buynder, F. Boenders en S. Delobel, kwam tot stand dankzij de steun van het Kunstendecreet van de Vlaamse Overheid.

"Having started in 1968 with figures and shapes in the style of Pop art and Hard edge, Guy Baekelmans (born 1940 at Berchem) soon provided simpler shapes and colours. The progression towards constructivism was accompanied in the first 20 years by an early interest in Eastern philosophies and led to optical and dynamic interchanges constructed in square. In 1972, together with figures like P.R. de Poortere and Guy Vandenbranden, Guy Baekelmans formed the International Work Group for Constructive Art. After 1980, the three dimensional became more prominent with autonomous, often monumental sculptures. There follows a freer expression based on Buddhistic universalism, which Guy Baekelmans describes as an opening into inexhaustible references beyond time and space, created by the interaction between the inner microcosm and the outer macrocosm, indivisibly and in total symbiosis."
