Architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de moderne Nederlandse architectuur. Hij ontwierp vooruitstrevende, complexe, grootschalige gebouwen met metropolitane allure, zoals het Groothandelsgebouw en de Euromast in Rotterdam en de pier van Scheveningen.
Hugh Maaskant geldt als godfather en voorloper van de generatie van Winy Maas (MVRDV), Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Willem Jan Neutelings en Rem Koolhaas. Toch was hij lange tijd ondergewaardeerd. Provoost beschrijft Maaskants werk als onderdeel van de optimistische, enerverende kant van de wederopbouw en de opwindende wereld van de jaren zestig. Daarnaast plaatst ze hem in de context van de Nederlandse architectuur, van latere generaties, met name die van de 'Super Dutch'. Naast historisch fotomateriaal bevat het boek recente foto's én een speciaal voor deze uitgave gemaakte serie van de internationaal bekende fotograaf Iwan Baan.
