Paul Veysseyre, born October 5, 1896 in Noirétable and died November 8, 1963 in Tours, was a French architect known for his many Art Deco style constructions during the interwar period, active in China (French Concession of Shanghai), Vietnam, Cambodia. Member of the Central Society of Architects of Paris (future Academy of Architecture) in 1937, decorated with the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918. Paul Veysseyre first worked in Paris in an architectural firm from 1912 to 1914 with the man he considered his master, the architect and academician and Prix de Rome, Georges Chedanne, who encouraged him to follow the school the fine Arts. In 1921, he was hired by the Brossard-Mopin establishments to work in China at Tien Tsin. Six months later, he was appointed architect in charge of the Shanghai office. He left the company to join in 1922 with Alexandre Léonard to create the French Sports Circle (1925) The French Sports Circle was the seat of the French community until the Second World War. Many dwellings have been designed, many of which are now classified as Historic Monuments and preserved. In 1937, he left to set up a branch of the agency in Saigon, teaming up with Arthur Kruze, acting director of the School of Fine Arts. The collaboration with Kruze ended in 1939 and that with Léonard in 1942. Paul Veysseyre remained in Indochina until 1951. Old Shanghai's architecture is world famous, particularly for the many Art Deco buildings designed and erected during its golden age in the 1920s and 1930s, before the Japanese invaded and the world changed. Many of the Art Deco gems in Shanghai were designed by the French architect Paul Veysseyre, the focus of this book. Coauthor Spencer Dodington has lived in and renovated many of Shanghai's Art Deco masterpieces, and coauthor Charles Lagrange has chronicled the history of Shanghai's French Concession in numerous articles. Together they have visited all surviving works by architect Paul Veysseyre. Having been granted with access to the private Veysseyre family archives outside Paris, plus extensive on-the-ground research in Shanghai, the two writers have created the definitive book on one of the city's greatest architects. His works in the French Concession brought contemporary French architecture, especially the glamorous new Art Deco style, to the booming port city in the 1920s and 1930s, to its lasting glory. This book sheds light on the story of one exceptional man and his creations, and also covers the French Concession's remarkable history and legacy. Spencer Dodington is an Art Deco fanatic. The Texas native, who's been living in Shanghai about 1995, is an expert on the style - he's published books about it. His house, an upper-level apartment in an Art Deco building from 1934 located in the former French Concession. Charles Lagrange is an engineer who has lectured on international concessions in China. He regularly provides tours of the French Concession in Shanghai, the legation quarter in Beijing, and international concessions in Tientsin. N° de réf. du vendeur 85809
