Decorative Cloth. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. John Austen (illustrateur). A good copy of Hamlet illustrated by John Austen in the original decorative cloth binding, with fair wrapper. Undated but 1922 - first edition in this format. John Austen was much influenced by Aubrey Beardsley, and this work is illustrated in that style. It is regarded by many as Austen's best work with numerous designs, in text and full page illustrations in black and white. The wrapper is very browned and fragile to edges with loss to the bottom 5.5 cm of the spine and considerable nibbling, tearing and loss along the top edge. The bottom edge is better but still fragile with small tears and nibbles. There is some tape repair. The wrap is in a removable protective covering. The binding is clean and sound. The bottom corners are bumped and there is some turning to top corners. The boards are faded towards edges and corners. The spine has pulled ends and is slightly cocked to the front. The bottom spine end is darkened. There is a small indentation at the side edge of the back board and a small scuff indent on the surface of the front board visible at some angles. There is a tiny mark at the top edge of the back board. The contents are complete, clean and sound. The paper is quite toned and there is the occasional small spot or mark. The decorative endpapers are clean with some browning to the free endpapers. The leaves next to the endpapers eg half title, have some light spotting. Page 39 has a sliver lost from the top side edge which is attached to the side edge of p 37, where the book was poorly opened. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
