Hardcover. Etat : Very Good+. Reprint. B&W Illustrations; This book is entirely in FRENCH. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The decorated covers have gilt, black and red embossing. The gilding has dulled a bit, especially on the spine. The text pages are clean, but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper used." Edmond François Valentin About (14 February 1828 16 January 1885) was a French novelist, publicist and journalist. During the next few years, he wrote novels, stories, a play (which failed) , a book-pamphlet on the Roman question, many pamphlets on other subjects of the day, innumerable newspaper articles, some art criticisms, rejoinders to the attacks of his enemies, and popular manuals of political economy, L'A B C du travailleur (1868) , Le progrès (1864). His more serious novels include Madelon (1863) , L'Infâme (1867) , the three that form the trilogy of the Vieille Roche (1866) , and Le roman d'un brave home (1880) a kind of counterblast to the view of the French workman presented in Émile Zola's L'Assommoir. He is best remembered as a farceur, for the books Le nez d'un notaire (1862) ; Le roi des montagnes (1856) ; L'homme à l'oreille cassée (1862) ; Trente et quarante (1858) ; Le cas de M. Guérin (1862; see Georges Maurice de Guérin).".

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-240, fly leaves at front and rear, original decorated tan cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped in black, publisher's ads printed in red on endpapers. First U.S. edition of this translation. "The Notary's Nose" was published earlier in the U.S. as THE NOSE OF A NOTARY (Boston: Loring, 1863). This Holt edition includes a short story, "Uncle and Nephew." Part of Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." A short and somewhat humorous science-fiction novel about the consequences of a medical operation in which a man who has lost his nose in a duel has a new one fashioned out of the flesh of another man's arm. The nose retains an occult connection with its former owner, and complications ensue. A variation on the idea that transplants of tissue and organs would also, in effect, transplant personality (a trope that goes back to FRANKENSTEIN). Leypoldt and Holt had earlier published About's THE MAN WITH THE BROKEN EAR, the second of three short science-fiction novels written by About. Reginald 00014A. Versins, Encyclopédie de l'Utopie, des Voyages Extraordinaires et de Science Fiction, p. 12. Slight spine lean, some age-darkening and light soiling to cloth, a good, sound copy. (#118264).

8vo. xx, 284 pp., plus 8 pp. publisher's ads. Plum-coloured pebbled publisher's cloth, embossed borders front & back covers, gilt lettering on spine (minor chipping head & foot of spine, slight sunning, edgewear, w/o ffep.), still a VG- copy, from the libraries of H.M. Hosick (1845-1935), noted dealer in leathers, furs & hides in Chicago, IL, and Jean F. Carroll (1900-1973), former Kroger Executive, and son of Iowa Governor Beryl F. Carroll (1860-1939). First American edition of this significant French work on labor unions, labor organizing, originally published as L'ABC du travailleur in 1868, drawing from interviews by the author with Parisian workers, artisans, and laborers. Prepared against the backdrop of the attempted reforms by Napoleon III during the Second Empire, there had been passed an 1864 right to strike law, but workers could decide whether to participate independently, and still restricted from freedom, while many laws controlling what licenses and papers workers had to retain, whether they could change employers, and much more were still in place. The United States itself had become swept up in massive labor strikes and unrest beginning with July, 1871 labor strikes at the New Albany Glass Works, and others built up to the 1873 Great Railroad strikes following the implosion of the Railroad Building Boom that set off a recession from 1873-1878 in the United States. It's estimated that over $ 40 billion in property was destroyed during the subsequent unrest over several years. About (1828-1885) was a French journalist, novelist, and publicist, who was quite successful, with short stories, and pamphlets, as well as popular manuals on labor and economics, before becoming successful with his XIX Siecle paper which protested against conservative reactionaries following the Franco-Prussian War. The original American edition in English is quite scarce.
