Frontispiece, 3 ff., 743, X pp.; 2 ff., (745-) 1549 pp., with many illustrations in the text, plates, maps (some folding) Later half-cloth, original illustrated front covers bound in First edition of this amply illustrated work with several maps and itinerary plans. The lieutenant-colonel de Burthe d'Annelet travelled extensively through the French colonies in Africa. He explored new routes and gathered information for the Ministere des Colonies as well as for the Musée d Histoire naturelle. Here he wants to present his findings and experiences to a wider public, many photos were taken by himself. They show the people and their habits, buidlings, instruments, arms etc. - Very good copy withdrawn from an institute of oriental studies with several small stamps, labels to the spine but no tape and no visible traces of use, just some signs of age, paper somewhat browned, only the bound in wrappers with some staining, else mostly clean. Due to the stamps (strongly taken into account with the price!) this is not for the bibliophile but a very good copy for the interested reader or scholar.

Mollien succeeded in locating the sources of the the Corubal and the Gambia rivers, as well as two tributaries of the Senegal, the Bifang and the Félémé. However, the rainy season and dysentery forced him to end his travels there. This account of his journey "marked him as a gifted writer and shrewd observer, equally interested in geology, ethnology and native traditions" (Howgego). ABBEY Travel 273. HOWGEGO M51.

Light scattered brownspotting. Scarce first edition of this early, and perhaps the first scientific, travel expedition in Senegal - an example of a new scientific attitude and method in travel litterature. The author was primarely a botanist, and the results of the expedition was planned to be published in further volumes. Only this volume, relating to conchology and molluscs was published. The first part gives an account of the voyage in the years 1749 to 1753, and the second part describes the conchs and molluscs (conquillages) in fine engravings. - Not in Brunet and Graesse. - Nissen ZBI No. 27 - Casey A. Wood p. 180.
