Cloth slightly rubbed; earlier owner's ink stamp to front pastedown, and name signed on front free endpaper; a few fox spots to endpapers and edges. Good to very good condition. Afrikaans text. Uncommon. (Nienaber I, p. 33) 'Die Armblanke en die Maatskappy' is by J. R. Albertyn, and 'Die Moeder en die Dogter van die Arm Gesin' is by M. E. Rothmann. The first Carnegie Commission, through grants from the Carnegie Corporation, the Union government and the Dutch Reformed Church, explored the 'poor white' problem between 1928 and 1932. Among the five commissioners appointed were the Dutch Reformed minister Johannes Albertyn of Kimberley, and the Afrikaans author Maria Rothmann, also known as M.E.R. Albertyn and Maria Rothmann were responsible for this, the final volume of the 5-volume report.

Congress addressed by a number of prominent Afrikaners and which dealt with Afrikaner urbanisation. The binding is secure and flexible. The book appears well-thumbed and worn although never borrowed from the lib. Scarce document of what was a major concern at the time.

This series of booklets were written by Albertyn at the request of the General Poor Relief Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church in Transvaal (or the ?N.H. of G. Kerk?). This series was intended, as stated in the Preface dated September 1941, not as a booklet about the poor but as a booklet addressed to the poor (the so-called ?minderbevoorregtes? (?the less privileged?)) This project can be seen as a continuation of the attempt to deal with the ?poor white problem". 1: 'My Boeresitplekkie of Sal ek Stad toe Trek?' : the brown card covers are benign. They have wear, creasing, handling and age marks. The contents are clean, placid, clear, creased, a little worn, unfussy. 2: 'My Eie Lewenswerk': the covers are gentle, assured, a little creased and worn. The contents are pastoral, clean, clear, confident. 3: 'My Eie Lewensmaat': The spine edge of the covers have foxing. They are a little worn, marked. They are assured and comfortable. The contents have some light foxing, user wear. Otherwise the page are clean, clear, unfussy. 4: 'My Eie Nèseier': A benign copy. The covers have age-related mottling, some light tanning to the edges, some light creasing and wear. They are healthy. The contents are also a little foxed about the edges. The pages are simply produced. They have light user wear. They are yet clean and clear. 5: 'My Eie Nasie': an avidly owned copy. The covers have wear, blots of foxing, creasing. They are placid and uncomplicated. The contents have evidence of eager use throughout. The pages are clean, clear, comfortably patrician. 6: 'My Eie Kerk': The covers are a little worn, foxed, creased, marked. They are sure and comfortable. The contents too, have some light foxing.
