Illustrated by Thomas Allom and George Pickering. With an engraved title page and approximately 200 plates. Several plates have been cut out, with a few being taped back in. The plate from page 43 is loose and inserted into the book. A detailed guide to Westmoreland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland. With details on notable places such as Alnwick Castle, Thrang Crag Slate Quarry and Windermere. WIth a bookplate to one 'Isaac Colebank' to the front paste-down. In half calf binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges and spine., Marks to the spine and boards. Bookplate to the front paste-down. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, binding weak. Pages between 126 and 141 are loose. The plate from page 43 is loose. Binding worn on page 100. Pages age-toned with some light spotting and the occasional offsetting. Marks throughout. Numerous plates have been cut out. A closed tear through the text on page 31. Good Only. book.

RUSSELL, RONALD (Guide to British Topographical Prints), p.122. "Allom was an architect, a designer of churches, workhouses and a military asylum, but he found time to produce and enormous amount of views." Clean, fresh copy with first few leaves only with light toning. All plates with tissue guards, rubbing to corners and backstrip extremities. Contemporary three quarter morocco, marbled boards, backstrip decorated and lettered in gilt. Aeg. Very good.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Thomas Allom (illustrateur). 1st Edition. The many picturesque, full-page steel engravings are based on drawings by Thomas Allom. This is a Vg quarto hardback in its original binding with three-quarter leather and buckram with interlacing circles pattern. The spine is somewhat distressed along the seams, with rubbing and cracking, but still firmly in place, if handled with care. Full-page b&w plates throughout. Frontispiece has foxing; further foxing to versoes of some plates. Pen inscription to reverse of front cover, dated 1856. Overall G to Vg. I have personally collated the 73 plates, and one is missing; another is loose. PHOTO ON REQUEST.

The first edition, dated to the engraved title.A beautiful topographical work by Thomas Allom, in which he explores the sights of Chester, Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, and Rutland.Illustrated with an engraved title, and seventy-two views across thirty-six plates.Collated, complete.Descriptive text by T. Noble and T. Rose.This volume is often found bound alongside other of Allom's topographical volumes. In a quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, a little worn. Loss of paper to the front joint. Small cracks resulting in loss of cloth to the spine, with further loss to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light marks and rubbing to the boards, spine is lightly faded. Small tide mark to the rear board to the fore edge. Front hinge is strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots, including to the plates. Good. book.

Views of Ambleside, Sunderland Harbour, topiary at Levins Hall, Raby Castle, Scotswood Bridge over the Tyne etc.

Spine decoratively blocked in gilt in 4 compartments and on bands, with burgundy lettering piece, inner gilt dentelles. Engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Tiny chip out of the head of upper joint else a most attractive fine binding in excellent condition. Some foxing or browning within but generally internally good.

Spine and corners are well rubbed with some mild loss to corners, outer hinges of spine are a little cracked at top edges but not inside and still firmly bound. Boards are scuffed and rubbed. Greyed and dulled foredges.Owner's label to front pastedown. Some mild to moderate fox spots at some page edges, to some plate edges with yellowing of protective tissues.
