Hardcover. Etat : Like New. First Edition. A firm and square hardback with sharp corners and strong joints, just showing a few very minor cosmetic rubs. Hence a non-text page has a small publisher's 'damaged' stamp. Despite such this book is actually in nearly new condition. Thus the contents are crisp, fresh and tight; no pen-marks. Now offered for sale at a very sensible price.

Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> The life of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) spanned one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of the artist's native France (1) Born less than nine years before the storming of the Bastille, the painter would eventually bear witness to three revolutions and the rise and fall (and eventual resurrection) of a rapid succession of monarchical, republican and imperial regimes. Such political instability was accompanied by enormous shifts in the social domain. Over the course of the first three-quarters of the nineteenth century, the industrial revolution finally took hold in France, bringing with it such life-altering developments as the introduction of factory production, rail travel and, most momentously perhaps, the rise of modern consumerism, a process signalled most spectacularly by the transformation of the capital city of Paris from a dank and congested, still essentially medieval city into a gleaming metropolis of spacious boulevards lined with an.

Ownership Inscription (of Art Historian John House) VG bright tight copy in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. 320pp. Illustrated throughout. 1st edition, 1st issue. This book examines the critical writing and journalistic reportage on Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres, from the time of his renunciation of the Salon in 1834 until his large retrospective at the 1855 Universal Exposition, the crucial middle decades of his career. This massive body of writing demonstrates how Ingres shaped his career in the rapidly evolving art world of mid-nineteenth century Paris. Enjoying the benefits of his affiliation with the Academy, the artist also employed certain modes of presentation, most notably the single-artist exhibition and illustrated monograph, through which he distanced himself and his work from the embattled world of artistic officialdom. Pursuing both paths, he assumed the new modernist ideal of a self-generating creative genius. The fluctuation in Ingres's critical persona - between puffed-up academician and unassuming artiste-maudit - provides a new context through which the formal qualities of his work, which vacillate between academic banality and modernist bizarrerie, can be understood.
