There is fraying to the top and bottom spine. Corners are rubbed with fraying on the bottom. Interesting for its illustrations.

Beige-coloured publisher's cloth, cover art illust. of corncob dolls, African-American children playing in hayfield on endpapers (minor darkenting to foot of spine, minor soiling in gutter), w/ d.j. cover art by Braune (minor chipping head of spine, tear to foot of spine, minor closed tears, edgewear), VG/G- copy, w/ former ownership markings on endpapers. First edition, stated, of the author's first book set amidst a young girl's adventures on an Alabama plantation, with a considerable amount of dialogue in southern African-American dialect. Braune (1908-1988) studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts, published this first book in 1937, illustrated several others, and was the librarian of the Fairhope, AL public library from 1948 to 1956.
