Edition originale
First edition. Large folio, 30 x 21 cm, pp [20], 605, [8]. Arricivita is an important source on the history of Texas and Arizona, which were both served by the Franciscan misionary efforts deriving from this "college" at Queretaro. Included is a life of Fr. Antonio Margil who was being considered for beatification at the time of the book's writing. There are also long descriptions of the work of Fathers Francisco Hidalgo and Francisco Garces in the Southwest missions, as well as much on the Sonoran missions. Howes B337 lists is as "a major source on the early southwest." Arricivita takes up where Espinosa's Chronica Apostolica left off, which explains the "Segunda Parte" on the title page, and a later volume by another author picks up where Arricivita left off. It is a rare book: except for this copy, it hasn't appeared at auction since 1994. This copy is from the library of the noted Mexicanist Michael Mathes, with his inconspicuous stamp on verso of title page. Contemporary vellum binding, title in old ink on spine. The first few leaves have been expertly repaired, at the bottom, not affecting text and barely noticeable;otherwise a fresh, clean copy in an excellent binding from the period.
