These pieces are accompanied by drawings from the artistÆs estate, mostly studies for the ceramic forms., English, Year1999, Illust. B/W8, Illust. Color16, ISBN NO ISBN, Code 4582. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Det Gyldne Aesel, (The Golden Ass) by Apuleius, translated from Latin by Otto Gelsted. Illustrated by Axel Salto. Pub. Athanaeum, Kobenhavn, 1942 first ed. 237 pages. b/w 7 woodcuts. One of 100 copies (This being no. 59) specially bound in half leather with decorated paper covers to include an original signed etching by Axel Salto. The etching is bound in as the frontispiece. Additionally signed by Salto on the limitation page. In Danish. The binding is in about fine condition. Gilt titles to spine. The leather has variations of colour giving a slightly sprinkled effect. A very nice book in the hand and to the eye. Salto [1889-1961] was known primarily as a ceramicist. The Golden Ass is the only Latin novel from Ancient Rome to have survived. It's episodic, picaresque form following the adventures of the hapless, Lucius as he is transformed by a misfiring spell into a mule, a change which gives him insight into the conditions of the lower classes. The book's influence on Western literature has been profound and one can see echoes of it in Cervantes, Shakespeare and Chaucer.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Folio. 285mm x 370mm. 20 pp. Paper covered boards, illustrated to the front with details of Salto's other works to the rear board. No inscriptions or blemishes, the merest hint of wear at the foot of the spine, but really a splendid about fine copy of this work from the Danish artist and ceramicist, Axel Salto. In the introduction, he writes about the magic of linocuts and the joy in repeated patterns. The book addresses itself to the reader interested in exploring this medium for themselves. Many of the motifs; animals and natural forms were important to Salto's work as one of the great Modernists in Danish twentieth-century art. As an artist and theorist, Salto's influence spread far beyond his native Denmark.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Kusai's Haendelser (The Adventures of KusaI) Illustrations by Axel Salto. Pub. Berlingske Bogtrykkeri, 1934. First edition. Signed in pencil at the front of the book to the publication details. Small folio. Cream, paper-covered boards with cloth spine, woodcut illustration to the front panel.Minor grubbiness, merest touches of edge wear.Patterned endpapers, designed by Salto. A lovely copy of this rare title recounting the tale of a boy in Africa called 'Axel' but known as Kusai. He relates to animals, whose speech he begins to understand and helps a wounded deer. Then he falls in with a boy called Nogo. Salto [1889-1961] was an important figure in Danish art, a Modernist, who published an influential magazine for two years called Klingen. By the time he published Kusai's Haendelser, he was already established as a leading ceramicist, which would be the main focus of his artistic vision. This title, however, showcases his mastery of the Expressionist woodcut. A rare title, it is tempting to see in the fairytale something autobiographical - why else write that the boy is called 'Axel'? Perhaps he took elements of his own childhood and transplanted them to Africa? In any case, the book is exceptionally rare and the woodcuts with occasional coloured blocking speak to Salto's direct and striking style.
