Octavo, pp. 660, illustrations, publisher's brown cloth stamped in gold and blind, ship and swan endpapers. Later edition. Rivingtons published the first edition of the first series in 1866 and the first edition of the second series in 1868 in which Baring-Gould summarizes and retells twenty-four legends (twelve in each book) surrounding such topics as The Wandering Jew, Prester John, the Antichrist and Pope Joan, the Man in the Moon, the Mountain of Venus, etc. This "new edition" combines both books. A very popular work, reprinted many times and probably influential on subsequent fictional treatments of these motifs. The author's skepticism stands in contrast to the enthusiasm of, say, Montague Summers, another popularizer, from a subsequent generation, of fantastic legends. Baring-Gould went on to write supernatural tales of his own. Old bookplate affixed to the front paste-down. A very good copy. (#173714).

8°. 254 SS. Hln. d.
