Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Despatch from the Governor of Victoria, Sir Henry Barkly, to the Duke of Newcastle. Paper presented to both houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty, April 1862. 22pp. Proposes that confidence should be maintained "in the continuance of gold mining on a large scale.and is quite at variance with the ideas as to the rapid exhaustion of the alluvial diggings.". Top fore-edge corner a little dog-eared, else very good copy.

No Binding. Etat : Very Good. Drawn By Spy (illustrateur). First. A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Sir Henry Barkly, with the caption "The Cape of Good Hope" . With accompanying biographical details. Sir Henry Barkly, GCMG, KCB, FRS, FRGS (24 February 1815-20 October 1898) was a British politician, colonial governor and patron of the sciences.

"Rumours of the extent to which the Islanders of the Pacific Ocean are being enticed or torn from their homes to work at the Chincha guano fields, or in Peruvian mines, have long excited indignation in this colony [.]". The letter concludes: "The remedy to be applied must be left to the Imperial Government in its Wisdom to determine. It has never been backward in promoting any measure that would tend to check the exportation of slaves from Africa, and the outrage on humanity is undoubtedly in the present instance by so much the greater that slavery is not an institution of the South Sea Islanders, and that no internal slave trade exists by which the foreign trade can be fed."
