Illustrated with contemporary photographs, and a large folding map. The first edition of this British lawyer and judge's account of his time hunting in the safari's of East Africa under British rule.Illustrated throughout with photographic depictions of Gorell Barnes' adventures, and with a large folding map to the rear of the work.Barnes describes his delight hunting big game, with his preface explaining that this work 'desires merely to take the reader for a summer's camping in one of the newest of British possessions'.To the front free endpaper is the inscription of Leonard Harrison Matthews, a well regarded British zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with discolouration to back strip and small split in cloth to head of rear joint. Some marks to front board. Former owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pencil notation to frontispiece. Pages spotted throughout, with some instances of light foxing. Good. book.
