Leather. Etat : Good. Various (illustrateur). An engraved collection of the poetry of James Beattie and William Collins, a lovely collection from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. A nice collection of the poetical works of James Beattie and William Collins.Beattie and Collins were both influential poets of eighteenth century, their poetry paving the way for the Romantics that were to follow.Illustrated with many in-text engravings throughout, from the drawings of John Absolon. With memoirs of the lives and writings of the authors by Thomas Miller.Part of the series 'Tilt's Illustrated Classics'.Four pages of adverts to the rear. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, from her library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In a full morocco binding. Externally, leather is rubbed. A few light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'C. A. Leigh. from his sincere friend, W. Michell'. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spotting. Good. book.
