Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Lionel Barrymore (1878 - 1954), of the famous Barrymore acting family, was one of the greatest American actors of both stage and screen. David Belasco (1853 - 1931) was one of the most powerful theatre producers, directors, and playwrights of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, producing over 100 plays. Belasco was the first person to have adopted the short story "Madame Butterfly" to the stage. Belasco Theatre, just off Broadway on West 44th Street in New York, was for years the main theatre for important plays. Mr. Belasco was also responsible for establishing, or helping to further, the careers of a great many famous performers, including Mary Pickford, Barbara Stanwyke, Jeanne Engels, Leslie Carter, and Maude Adams. He also worked with D. W. Griffith, Lillian Gish, Helen Hayes, and various members of the Barrymore family. ********************************************* Presented here is a handsome - and rare - Belasco Theatre Program from February 1924. The play, a smash hit, was adapted from the Italian of Fausto Martini's "Ridi, Pagliaccio" by David Belasco and Tom Cushing. Belasco was also the Director. In 1928 a silent film of the same title was adapted from this play by MGM. It starred Lon Chaney and Loretta Young.
