Hardcover. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Thus. Light foxing to the edges of the page block. Scattered foxing throughout the book. Minor wear to the dust jacket. This title in the publisher's Americana Classics series is a reprint of the first edition published in English in 1828. The subject matter is summarized in the subtitle: Leading to the Discovery of the Sources of the Mississippi and Bloody River; with a Description of the Whole Course of the Former, and of the Ohio. From the dust jacket: "This is the only account of its kind of the upper Mississippi frontier as seen through the eyes of a cultured and educated cosmopolitan." That would be the author, who took leave from a successful judiciary career in Italy to explore the American West for himself, which had captured the imagination of Europeans in the early eighteenth century. 545 pages, illustrated with three plates of Indian ornaments and a fold-out map of the Mississippi River from its source to the Gulf of Mexico.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. First edition in English. Two octavo volumes, pp. lxxiii, 472; 545 pp, with three plates showing "Indian Ornaments,", engraved frontis portrait of the author "in his Dress among the Indians," two folding plans and a folding map of the course of the Mississippi. Bound in contemporary three-quarter leather and marbled boards. Ex-library, with call numbers on spines and ownership and discard stamps on the Bemidji Public Library. Inscribed on both front free endpapers "Presented to the Public Library of Bemidji, Minnesota by Edward C. Gale, Minneapolis, April 1921," and with correspondence from Gale to the library in an envelope affixed to the rear pastedown of Volume II. Gale (1862-1943) was a Minneapolis attorney, historian, civic leader, and philanthropist. Frontispiece of Volume I and title page of Volume II partially detached. Map is laid in loose and has creasing, tears, and small losses. Plan of the Palace Gardens belonging to the Duke of Baden has a tape repair to the verso and some losses; plan of Karlsruhe in fine condition. Plates are foxed. Bindings are tight and text clean. Volume I deals entirely with Europe. Volume II "covers the author's year in America, during which he traveled from the eastern seaboard to the Mississippi via the Ohio Valley, thence up the river to its tributaries in Minnesota, and then down the river to New Orleans. He undertook a hazardous and lonely journey in his search for the sources of the Mississippi and other rivers, in which he claimed success" (Clark II, 182). Eberstadt: "The second volume is almost entirely devoted to the author s travels among the Northwestern Indians of whom he gives some novel particulars. His itinerary was from Pittsburgh down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to Ft. Anthony; thence into Canada and down the Red River, giving an account of Selkirk Colony, thence across to the Missouri and down the Mississippi to New Orleans." Sabin 4605; Howes B-338; Field 111.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Vol I includes engraved frontispiece, fold-out plans of the Palace Gardens Belonging to the Grand Duke of Baden and the Town of Karlsruhe; Vol II has a large fold-out map of the Mississippi/Gulf of Mexico and three plates of artifacts. The fold-out plans and map are intact but with small closed diagonal tears where they are attached to the text and a small amount of foxing. Very good, first edition books in original boards with new cloth spines. Brown paper covered boards with red cloth on spines; gilt lettering and graphics on spines. Board panels are soiled and with some small stains, also scuffed. Edges are rubbed through; Vol II has several scrapes along the upper, side and lower edges. The lower back fore-edge corner of Vol I is softened. Edges at head and tail of board spine are crimped. Previous owner's name is written on both front board panels in the upper right fore-edge corners; it appears to be the same name as that on both bookplates on front paste-downs. All external edges are age- and soil-darkened. Side and lower edges are untrimmed. Small amount of pencil marks on end papers. The inside front gutters of both are cracked. The inside back gutter of Vol I is 75% cracked from the top. Transfer stains to end-papers (and verso of frontispiece in the case of Vol I). The upper one-third of the gutter is cracked from pp. 449-465. Text pages are clean with any internal foxing primarily limited to the end-papers and a few of the pages at beginning and end of text. Text blocks shaken due to the gutter cracks but the red fabric covering the spines appears to have a stabilizing effect to some degree. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Additional photos available at your request. International sales to all countries other than the UK and Canada will require use of an alternative shipping company which will result in higher than the stated shipping costs. A signature upon receipt may also be required.
