Soft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. xix, 160 pp; 1 folding plate. Later wrappers. Ink stamp of "Gabinetto Medico-Chirurgico per la cura delle malattie dell'orecchio, del naso e della gola" on front wrapper. Foxed. Stain in upper blank corner of text. Folding plate stained (see photo). First Edition. SIGNED BY FRANCESCO BENNATI TO NICCOLÒ PAGANINI: "L'auteur à son excellent et/ honorable ami N. Paganini/ Bennati." Francesco Bennati was both a physician (laryngologist) and a singer. Of most relevance to the book offered here, he was also physician to the violinist Paganini. "Francesco Bennati was at once a physician and a highly accomplished singer. . . . His medical education took place in Pavia; the castrato Pacchierotto oversaw his vocal training. In Paris the doctor was appointed house physician at the Théâtre Italien in the summer of 1830, a year before he published his study of Paganini. . . . The appointment charged him with the health of the most celebrated singers in Europe (Sontag, Malibran, Lalande, Fodor, Rubini, Lablache, and Donzelli) and rendered the opera house at the Salle Favart his scientific laboratory" (Davies, Romantic Anatomies of Performance, p. 133). Having been Paganini's physician for ten years, Bennati published in 1831--the year before the publication of his book on the human voice--an article on Paganini from a medical point of view: "Notice physiologique sur Niccolò Paganini" (Revue de Paris, 1831). Just as Paganini's bodily attributes interested his own physician Bennati, they continue to fascinate physicians today, and Bennati's account remains of value in current discussions of Paganini. Paganini died in 1840 of throat cancer and for years previously could hardly speak. Maybe Bennati gave this book to his patient Paganini only because they were friends. But perhaps there was also a medical reason for the gift. Signed by Author(s).
