Bennett writes not just the natural history of their species but the specific temperaments and characteristics, then living in the collection--the great cats, hyenas, wolves, bears, monkeys, eagles, elephants, vultures owls, macaws, alligators, anacondas and more. Illustrated with "portraits of each, taken from life, by William Harvey, and engraved on wood by Branston and Wright. This work marks the closing days of the 600-year history of the menagerie, as by 1832, all of the animals had been transferred to the Zoological Society of London. Provenance: From the library of Albert A. Howard (AHA) and label of bookbinder F. Wesley on Friar Street, London. Bound in 1/4 black Morocco over pale yellow paper overed boards, spine lettering gilt, covers rubbed or finger soiled, short split to rear hinge but quite stable, corners worn. A very nice copy clean without foxing.
