First edition. Detective novel frequently cited as one of the best ever written. Dedicated to Bentley's friend and fellow author, G. K. Chesterton, who had dedicated THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY (1908) to Bentley. "The birth of naturalism in characterization." - Haycraft, Murder for Pleasure.
