Octavo, boards. First U.S. edition. Mystery, or "shocker", novel in the tradtion of John Buchan, as the dedication makes clear. Bentley and Buchan were schoolmates at Oxford and lifelong friends. Hubin (1994), p. 67. Small ball-point pen mark on front free endpaper, else a fine copy in near fine dust jacket. (#80226).

Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-375 [376-378: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], inserted frontispiece with color illustration by Hickling, original decorated blue cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, decorated endpapers. First edition. Detective novel frequently cited as one of the best ever written. Dedicated to Bentley's friend and fellow author, G. K. Chesterton, who had dedicated THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY (1908) to Bentley. "The birth of naturalism in characterization." - Haycraft, Murder for Pleasure. John Carter considered Bentley to be "the father of the contemporary detective novel." A Haycraft-Queen "cornerstone." Hubin (1994), p. 67. Cloth rubbed at spine ends, corners and along outer joints, several faint scratches to cloth on rear cover, a sound, good copy with tight and clean interior. (#116956).
