Octavo, pp. [3-8] 9-409 [410], original brown cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained brown. First edition. Mixed collection including fantasy, psychological thrillers and crime fiction. "The Man Who Hated Flies" is a short ecological parable. In "End of Phipson," the protagonist undergoes a physical shrinking commensurate with his shrinking reputation as a writer until he is stepped on and the resulting minor mess swept away. In "The Wind and Mr. Tittler," the protagonist is carried off into space by an unnatural wind. Dystopian and dyspeptic visions abound. "The Summary" presents a sardonic tale against the background of Judgment Day. At least a dozen of the stories have fantastic elements or uncanny atmosphere, often with a strongly symbolic or allegorical level. The real hero of many of these tales is Fate. Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 179. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 72. Johnson, J. D. Beresford, pp. 62-66. Hubin (1994), p. 68. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). A fine copy in about good printed dust jacket (priced 7/6) with shallow chipping at edges, a couple of short tears at edges, and mild general dust soiling. (#137593).
