No Binding. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not a book but a seven-inch, 45 rpm, "single" record, Chess Records 1700 (U-8868), very-good vinyl, dark blue label with the letters "CHESS" in silver, stacked vertically. (Some adhesive residue to label verso from old nametag, now removed.) "Carol" featured on the Rolling Stones' first, eponymous, 1964 LP, and remained on their live playlist throughout the sixties (a slower, more rock-oriented live version appearing on "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!," 1969.) The song was also covered by other notable rockers, including the Beatles, who actually recorded it for BBC broadcast in 1963. This "very good" 45 "single" now reduced from $12.

No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. Not a book but a seven-inch, 45 rpm, "single" record, Chess Records 1866, near-mint vinyl bearing the fancy, red-gold-and-blue "knight" label. The odd inclusion of the song title "Surfin' U.S.A" in parentheses under the song title "Sweet Little Sixteen" does appear to have an explanation -- sort of. At his "Collector's Guide to the Music of Chuck Berry" web site, Dietmar Rudolph reports "During his first imprisonment from February 1962 to October 1963, Chuck was not allowed to record any new material. But Chess wanted to sell records. So they released 'Chuck Berry Twist' (Chess LP-1465, February 1962) which was another collection of Chuck's Greatest Hits. The record is also known as 'More Chuck Berry' and 'Rhythm & Blues Rendez-Vous.' . . . Then something strange happened. A new generation of musicians became very successful: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, et cetera. And they played . . . Chuck Berry music. And they told everyone that it was Chuck Berry music they played. So in August 1963 the Chess brothers took from their archives what hadn't been released so far and created a Chuck Berry album with new songs. For some reason they also thought this album would sell better if it sounded and looked like it was recorded live on stage. So they dubbed live audience to the tapes and called the album 'Chuck Berry On Stage' (Chess LP-1480, August 1963). Of course this was a lie just like the note including 'Surfin' USA.' Chuck Berry never recorded 'Surfin' USA,' even though the Chess Brothers concurrently released a 45 rpm single with 'Sweet Little Sixteen' (subtitled 'Surfin' USA') b/w 'Memphis' (Chess 1866), again both titles 'enhanced' with fake audience. We all know that it was the Beach Boys who covered 'Sweet Little Sixteen' and added their own lyrics. . . ." NOTE to our European and U.K. customers: We can generally ship one or two, 7-inch, 45 rpm records overseas, padded in a box, for the 8-ounce rate, $16. We will reduce our default shipping charge (designed to handle books of one kilo) appropriately. Shipping anything from three such 45s, to 17 such 45s, will tend to cause our package to fall between 9 oz. And 2 lbs. (0.90 kilograms.), and will thus increase our international shipping rate to $26. This 45 rpm "single" now reduced from $16.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Not books but a pair of 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm Chuck Berry stereo rock 'n roll LPs on the discount Pickwick label. In addition to the title tune, "Sweet Little Rock and Roller," Pickwick SPC3345 (1973), near-mint vinyl in a very good cardboard jacket which is starting to show some ringwear, also offers "Carol," "Oh Baby Doll," "It Hurts Me Too," Chuck Willis' "C.C. Rider," four others. OUR SECOND RECORD ALBUM, "Wild Berrys," Pickwick SPC-3392 (1974), very-good-plus vinyl in a very-good-plus jacket which still wears its original shrink-wrap as well as an original orange Day-Glo "$1.99" price sticker, offers "I Do Really Love You," "It's Too Dark In There," "Good Lovin' Woman," "Put Her Down," five others. Both these albums previously released on the Mercury label, here combined into a lot to consolidate shipping charge. Cover model for "Sweet Little Rock and Roller" not identified, more's the pity. Vixens of Vinyl, the pair of LPs now reduced from $14.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Illustrations: Dave Willardson (illustrateur). Not a book but a two-record set of 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl LPs, Chess 2CH 60023, near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus gatefold cardboard jacket (which has been neatly clipped to bottom corner) listing Chuck's 1955-1966 Chess Records discography to centerfold. (Record describes itself to jacket as "stereo," though as some of these cuts are apparently original recordings from 1957-58 we have our doubts that they were all originally RECORDED in stereo.) Disc labels state "all selections are written by Chuck Berry" but jacket rear panel more correctly states all selections by Chuck Berry EXCEPT five selections including "Driftin' Blues" (Charles Brown, Moore, Williams), "Down the Road Apiece" (Raye), "Merry Christmas Baby" (Baxter, Moore), etc. A few of these 24 cuts are a bit obscure ("Run Rudolph Run"? "Jaguar and the Thunderbird"?) but these discs do offer "Carol," "You Never Can Tell," "Sweet Little Rock and Roller," "Little Queenie," etc. Reduced from $18.

Vendeur : Cat's Curiosities, Pahrump, NV, Etats-Unis
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl compilation rock 'n roll record album on the discount Pickwick label, Pickwick/33 SPC-3512, "electronically enhanced for stereo," compiled "By arrangement with Mercury Record Productions," very-good-plus vinyl in a very-good cardboard jacket with some edge wear. Chuck Berry offers "Johnny B. Goode" and "Reelin' and Rockin'"; The Platters perform "Only You" and "The Great Pretender"; Bill Haley and his Comets offer "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (which was of course written in 1954 by Jesse Stone -- usually credited as Charles Calhoun -- and initially recorded in that year by Big Joe Turner.) Jerry Lee Lewis here covering "Drinkin' Wine, Spo Dee O'Dee" is perhaps even more interesting, as this jump blues, written by Stick McGhee and J. Mayo Williams in 1949 and originally recorded for Atlantic by Sticks McGhee & His Buddies -- is credited as one of the first rock 'n roll songs, five years before Elvis, though Atlantic executives insisted McGhee replace the term of address in the title refrain, which originally began "Mother--" with the four now-familiar nonsense syllables. Fats Domino here also contributes two of his best-known hits. Reduced from $14.

No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not a book but a pair of seven-inch, 45 rpm, "single" records, Chess 1729, "Back in the U.S.A.", very-good-plus 1959, and Chess 1653, "School Day" (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell), awfully close to mint, with the silver print on the dark blue label bright & shiny, 1957. The two Chuck Berry Chess singles combined into a lot to consolidate shipping charge. (For some reason, although Chuck Berry performs "Johnny B. Goode" over the opening credits, and does appear as himself in the low-budget rocker "Go Johnny Go," the film is actually about talent scout Alan Freed -- also playing himself -- discovering teen sensation . . . Jimmy Clanton?) NOTE to our European and U.K. customers: We can generally ship one or two, 7-inch, 45 rpm records overseas, padded in a box, for the 8-ounce rate, $16.
