Original dark red cloth, spine gilt, front board gilt-ruled with gilt- stamped publisher's logo, t.e.g. Light shelf wear, interior lightly toned.Very good. Lakeside Press reprint containing two works on overland travel to and life in California during early years of American settlement, with introduction by noted historian and editor Milo Quaife. This is number twenty- six in the Lakeside Classics series. General John Bidwell was author of the "first published narrative of an overland trip to California made with the purpose of settling" - Howes. After reaching California, Bidwell became heavily involved in civic affairs, running for Governor in 1875 and eventually as the Prohibition Party's presidential candidate in 1892. The present work is one he wrote later in life, telling the story of his emigration as well as of early events after his arrival in California. John Steele was part of a group of lead miners who crossed overland to California in 1850, where he remained for three years. Nearly half a century later, he wrote IN CAMP AND CABIN about his time there. Kurutz describes IN CAMP AND CABIN as a "detailed and important account of mining life", including important information on mining techniques and laws. HOWES S924a. KURUTZ 598 (note).
