Hardcover. Etat : Good. Uncommon. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and red lettering to front. Extensive staining to boards with signs of damp. Corners are bumped, edges are worn. Spine is age darkened with damage to the cloth both at the ends and again about a third of the way up. Hinges are weak; both inner hinges are broken. The binding is loose; the bundles are separating. Light foxing and moderate tanning to pages and plates. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Pencil inscription to second free endpaper. Prominent stains to front pastedown where ex libris plate was removed. Light cracking to gutters and hinges but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with noticeable dark staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean. Ow VG/ndj: xiv, 379pp., photo illustrations, advertisements, Black and white photographic plates and in-text photographs. detailed guidebook to Peking, Kalgan, Mukden, the Yangtze & Ichang, Wu-Shan Gorge, Wan-Hsien, Sui-Ting, Pauning, Chen-Tu, Ya-Chau, Kai-Ting, Chun-King and all points in between. With a careful look at mission hospitals, Protestant, Catholic, Inland, Scotch, Kia-Ting, Sui-Ting & other missions. This is a diary of the author's travels in China ends abruptly on June 22nd 1900, two days later he was killed when the raft on which he & his companion, Capt. Watts-Jones, were descending the Hwang-Ho was destroyed in rapids. Watts-Jones survived this incident, but in a few weeks later met his own end at the hands of the Deputy Prefect of Kewi-Hwa-Cheng. The narrative covers a 15 month period from 1899-1900. The author was interested in the opening up of China via railway concessions, has a great deal of interest to report on all aspects of life, trade, politics & mission work in the areas he visited. With a look at superstitions & secret societies, &c. narrative of the places, people & customs.

Bound in blue cloth covered hard boards, gilt lettering to the spine and with lettering in red and a large gilt Chinese dragon decoration to the upper board. Illustrated with a portrait of the author to the frontispiece and with 56 further illustrations from photographs. Birch travelled extensively in northern and central China in 1899 to 1900 including from Peking to Mukden, on the Yangtze River to Ichang and We-Shan, and onto Chengdu and Chungking. Based on his diaries he recounts his travels in most readable style in this book. Near Fine condition, spine a little dust dulled and browning to the verso of the end-papers only. A pretty copy.
