Boards bumped and worn with surface tears and abrasions. Spine panel missing. Short closed tears at leading edge to both ffep and title page and short closed tears to latter section at gutter. Pages are otherwise clean but whilst pleasing in its decay this is a fragile survivor in need of a gentle home.

A wonderful example of this very scarce work from Scottish painter Jemima Blackburn, known for her illustrations of life in rural Scotland, and for her ornithological works.Illustrated with a lithographic title page and frontispiece, and eighty six further lithographs, all illustrated by the author. Collated, complete.Divided into eighty seven chapters, each discussing a different bird, including discussions of owls, sparrows, buzzards, eagles and ospreys found in the Moidart region where Blackburn herself was born.With a Christmas 1896 inscription to the recto of the frontispiece, awarding the work to 'David King from Aunt Fanny'.A lovely copy of the first edition of this very scarce work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with fading to back strip and small stab hole to centre of spine. A touch of discolouration to board perimeters. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Inscription to verso of frontispiece. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good. book.
