Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Charles Robinson & Mary H. Robinson (illustrateur). Presumed First Edition Thus. No stated date c1912. Presumed first edition thus. vii, 56pp., 8 colour illustrations (including the frontispiece and decorated title-page), black and white header and footer illustrations, and an illustration on the fixed endpapers. Illustrations by Charles and Mary H. Robinson. William Blake first published Songs of Innocence in 1789, a collection of 23 short poems that he not only wrote but also illustrated himself. Although ostensibly a collection of poems for children, Blake's Songs raise challenging theological, philosophical, social, and political questions, and from the beginning they were read by adults as well as children. Over the next few years, Blake also composed Songs of Experience, a companion volume to Innocence containing another 21 poems (or so), and beginning in 1794, he most often published the two collections together in a single volume, as Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Showing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul. The present edition contains 21 'Songs of Innocence' and 9 poems from 'Songs of Experience'. The book is bound in the original cream cloth covered boards with gold titling and colour designs on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The spine is sunned with bumping to the spine ends and there is lighter bumping to the top front corner. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks and the colour plate facing page 46 has a little damage on the top and bottom edges where a thin layer of the paper has been lifted (the illustration itself it no affected). There is partial browning to the free endpapers but no inscription.

First published in 1794, Songs of Innocence is classic English poetry describing childhood states of innocence. Blake describes poetically the innocent's inevitable corruption by a harsh and unjust world. William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake s work is now considered seminal in the history of both poetry and the visual arts. Once considered mad for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is highly regarded today for his expressiveness and creativity, as well as the philosophical and mystical undercurrents that reside within his work. His work has been characterised as part of the Romantic movement. Blake s first collection of poems, Poetical Sketches, was published circa 1783. 56 pages. Printed by Turnbull and Spears, Edinburgh. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
