Small Quarto. Two volumes. Vol. 1: x pages, 1 leaf, 449 pages and vol. 2: xii pages, 1 leaf, 466 pages :illustrations, portraits and plates. The volume on the 18th century is a limited edition and is still the most important reference for how medicine was practiced in Colonial Virginia. Included are inventories of medical books owned by Virginians. The volume on the 19th century is often sought after since it is essential on Civil War medicine. It shows the well-known surgeons, the title pages of the medical books they used, and the horror of treating 190,000 in Virginia alone (p. 284). The descriptions of sanitation problems, the state of the hospitals is appalling. The greatest danger came from encamped forces where disease spread quickly, the safest place was to be on the march. There was a volume issued earlier on the 17th century in a different format but it has become very scarce. Both volumes bound in a decorative cloth decorated in black, red and cream, decorative spine. Some finger soiling. A very nice set.
