Spine unevenly sunned, patches and bands of sunning to boards, extremities worn and bumped. Edges foxed. Inscribed by Bolitho in blue pen to ffep: "To Herman, with love/ from Sybil/ December 1937". Else, clean and tight. In the wonderful and stylish yellow, black and turquoise illustrated dust jacket: price-clipped, spine darkened and rubbed, significant wear and numerous losses, spine fragile, webbed with long closed tears. An interesting inscribed copy of an artfully designed book. Good+/ good- A novel of grief and a tribute to her late first husband, the South African journalist and author, William Bolitho, it was published four years after his death. Bolitho's thinly veiled autobiographical second outing "is the story of how Helen found John again, and how she found life again in her search for John". While "entirely a novel [.] no attempt is made to disguise the fact that it springs from actual lives [.]. Letters and fragments from notebooks written by Bolitho himself are woven into the narrative" (front flap). Bolitho was on the cusp of literary success when he died; he described "his stuff" as "so queer and new and aloof". Bolitho's dedicatee is Herman Schrijver (1904-1972), the successful Dutch Jewish interior decorator with Elden's Limited, who was known for designing interiors for clients like the Prince of Wales and Wallis Simpson. "A man of immense culture, a wit and bon vivant," he was a close friend of Ivy Compton Burnett; perhaps Bolitho and Schrijver met in the interconnected and overlapping cultural circles of London, where both were based. Bolitho wrote at least five novels and by 1934 was working as the European production representative for MGM.
