Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads 'For Marilyn Hatch, Sincerely yours, Willard Hallam Bonner, March 26, 1947.' There is also an ex libris bookplate affixed to the front inside cover with the name Marilyn Hatch printed on it. There are no other attachments in the book. You can see that the green covers are in excellent condition and very clean, with bright gilt lettering. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover nicely tight pages throughout. These pages are very clean. In scrolling through and not seeing any soiling at all. There's a very small amount of very light soiling foxing on the middle page edge, not at all conspicuous, and it has no bearing at all on the actual pages. The pages are also in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any creasing of any kind, no dogeared corners. The inside covers and end papers do have a little bit of vertical shadowing and light foxing. You'll see that in the photo of the site inscription. There are no markings in the book. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket is rated only Good Minus. It has wear at the front top edge which includes slight loss, a small tear off the front bottom edge. There's a little loss off the top edge of the spine, a small tear the middle of the spine, a little bit of handling soiling on the rear cover, also a small triangular loss off the top edge there. The jacket is clean. The flaps are in decent shape. They do have toning at the top and side margins, as well as some very light foxing. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all, and has been fitted with a protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'No privateer in the history of the world has been caught in a greater storm of controversy than Captain William Kidd. Did he swing from a rope at Execution Dock in England for a murder he never committed? Is his loot just another legend, or does it still lie buried along the coast of the eastern United States, Gardners Island, Cowl Neck, Oyster Bay, Rye Beach, or at least two spots along the Hudson River? Has he received his due at the hands of the pamphleteers, poets, ballad singers, and authors from Washington Irving to Robert Louis Stevenson? These and countless other questions are answered by Willard Hallam Bonner in his engrossing and comprehensive study of the enigmatic figure who was born the devout son of a Scottish minister, died a rogue's death, and has endured over the years as the arch-pirate. Dr. Bonner has tracked Captain Kidd relentlessly through the sparse facts of his life and the legends that have grown through generations of defilers and disciples. What emerges is a portrait in true perspective, two portraits actually, one unadorned, the other colorful and often lurid, but each by now inseparably merged with the other. What emerges, too, are revealing sidelights on a little-known era of Anglo-American history, the reign of King William, when people in power practiced piracy as brazenly as the knaves who carried prices on their heads, when men like William Penn asked for and received shares of stolen booty. An anthology of Kidd ballads and poetry is included. Skulduggery and swashbuckling deeds are told with a wholly pleasing lilt and vigor that have enabled them to survive the singing societies, camp meetings, concert halls, and minstrels to the present day.' Willard Hallam Bonner received a Master of arts degree from Stanford in 1921 and a doctorate degree in philosophy from Yale in 1931. He was a Professor of English at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1922 to the 1968. He was also the James H. McNulty Professor of English between 1955 and 1968 and the director of graduate studies in English between 1958 in 1967. He was professor emeritus between 1968 and 1980. Inscribed by Author(s).
