Boards have heavy edge-wear with substantial bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over.Fraying to spine ends and corners.

No date but an early edition, c. 1895. 40 colour plates by W H J Boot, all in place and in excellent condition with tissue guards which are in very good condition. A few of the guards have minor yellowing in places. The plates are bright, clean and unmarked. They have the name of each plate in French as well as English. There are black and white etchings of features of the trees are at the head and end of each chapter. Unmarked throughout and no inscriptions but for name on ffep. 160 pages + 16 pages of ads, four of which are uncut at side edge. Pale yellowing of front and rear endpapers. Tight binding. The green cloth cover, with bright gilt lettering, has a little wear at top & base of spine and at corners.

Boot.This is the 1886 'Cheaper Edition' of 'Lorna Doone', Blackmore's popular work of romance. It is based on a group of historical characters and is set in the 17th century in both Devon as well as Somerset.Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) was an English novelist who is sometimes referred to as the 'Last Victorian'. This is one of his most popular works.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound. A few marks with some fading to the boards, as well as some edge wear to the extremities and particularly to the spine. Hinges are very tender, with a tape reinforcement to the front hinge that is detaching from the front endpaper. Internally, strained binding in some places resulting in certain pages detaching from the binding. Pages are bright and generally clean, with some spotting. Plates are bright and clean. Hardcovers bound in 3/4 dark navy blue leather with burgundy marbled paper-covered boards. Raised bands on the spines with compartments tooled in gilt and with burgundy and brown leather labels on the spines. All edges marbled, and with marbled endpapers. Light to moderate wear to the bindings. The hinges are secure and the leather is supple. There is a bit of rubbing to the front board of Volume I. Text blocks are sturdy. The text is a little toned shows some foxing around the plates. Overall an attractive set. Collates complete with 80 color plates. Each volume contains 20 trees, and each tree has two color plates: one image of the tree and a second image of the leaves, flowers, fruit or nuts. No date; likely late 19th century.
