The BBB was his life's work; it was dispersed in 3 astounding sales at Christie's New York in 2005. Michael Laird was the principal author of the catalogues for the Second and Third sales, and his research was utilized through the catalogue for the First (obliquely credited in the introduction to same).

Laminated wrappers, 4to, 30 cm, 167 pp, plates (some colour). 75 items. Introduction by J. Toulet. "The Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana is a very comprehensive bibliographical reference library, the indispensable working tool of the internationally renowned firm of rare-bookdealers, Martin Breslauer, Inc., of New York. But beyond its immediate function it is also a mirror of the scholarly interests and bibliophilic tastes of its owner, B.H. Breslauer. The BBB comprises such special collections as a major group of works illustrative of the history of bibliography from the fifteenth century onwards, a vast assemblage of important library and booksale catalogues documenting the changing aims and tastes in bookcollecting from the sixteenth to the present century, and a very complete series of works on bookbindings of all periods. Mr Breslauer has attempted to obtain for his library as many special copies as possible of such works: author's own and annotated copies, presentation copies, copies printed on vellum, on large and fine paper or in outstanding bindings. Such copies are, by their very nature, notoriously difficult to find, for owners of works of scholarship have, as a rule, paid scant attention to their physical qualities. It is an honour and a great pleasure for us that this remarkable collection is to be shown in public for the first time at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana."- Michel Wittock, President of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana ." - from the introduction. With indexes of authors and titles, binders and designers of bindings, and first owners. Lower fore-edge corners slightly bumped, otherwise Near Fine.

Very tidy ex-library, octavo stapled light card covers (VG+); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book may reduce your overall postage costs.

Original green wrappers (faintly creased on lower wrapper; ink inscription on p. 1). Bernard Breslauer's perceptive analysis of the masterpiece of Florentine woodcut books, Frezzi's "Quadriregio" (The Four Realms) of 1508, which is in its own way equal to the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Venice: Aldus Manutius, 1499). This strange and wonderful novel and its illustrated are contextualized here with BHB's thoughtful assessment of the history of Florentine book illustration; a discussion on Piero Pacini (the publisher); and the amazed reception of "Il Quariregio" over a period of 500 years. That Breslauer's article is too-little known is due to the fact that very limited press-run of Roxburghe Club publications.

Limited edition of 450 copies. Cloth, mounted cover illustration, small folio, 306 pp, colour plates and ills. 137 items. From Nicolas Barker's review in The Book Collector: "a new catalogue of more than ordinary splendour. A dozen and a half manuscripts, among them a magnificent 13th century bible in a 15th century cuir-cise binding, an outstanding Italian book of hours, a royal copy of Octavien de Saint-Gelais's poems, the beautiful Gospel lectionary of the Abbey of St Victor, Cardinal Bembo's illuminated printed Petrarch, and a spectacular Stammbuch with beautiful 'silhouette' pages - all this accompanies a block book, some striking 15th century bindings, a wonderful Malermi bible, Mantegna's Triumphs of Caesar in 16th century Chiaroscuro, and the Picasso Buffon in an outstanding Bonet binding. It would be impertinent to describe this as the mixture as before, but at least it has the same taste, the same patent desire to surpass its predecessors, that has distinguished Mr Breslauer and Mr Grcib's previous catalogues." With Indexes of I Authors and Titles; II Artists, Binders, Calligraphers, Illuminators, &c., and III Some Special Subjects. Small bruise to top of front board, creasing to about a dozen leaves, otherwise Very Good. List of Prices laid in.
