[From jacket flaps] Bowed down by generations of grief, the black American struggled upward on shouting, soaring dreams of salvation. While he endured, as he dreamed, he drew upon a rich inheritance of folk literature from Africa and combined it with a vivid oral tradition. Here is the record of that unique experience of living: a marvelous selection of the Negro's written and spoken culture. Without the African cultural ingredient, there would be no Negro folklore as distinct from others of the New World. Probably no people have been so completely the bearers of tradition as the African slave-immigrants. They brought with them no material possessions to aid in preserving the arts and customs of their homeland. But they carried in their minds and hearts a treasure of complex musical forms, dramatic speech, and imaginative stories, which they perpetuated through the vital art of self-expression. Wherever the slaves were ultimately placed, they established an enclave of African culture that flourished in spite of environmental disadvantages. The culture of Afro-Americans became infused with regional characteristics, but the many local patterns of song, story, belief, and speech show a common background. This is the most complete and authoritative - and entertaining - collection of American Negro folklore ever published. J. Mason Brewer has spent a lifetime in research and collection of folk materials; he is regarded as America's leading Negro folklorist. The late J. Frank Dobie called him "undoubtedly the best storyteller of the Negro folk tale writing anywhere today." In this book, Dr. Brewer explains, "I have tried to avoid the inclusion of literary productions by authors who have used folklore as source material for their writings. My purpose has been to include only those items that can be logically classed as authentic in - the Negro folklore tradition. They are from and about the folk Negro - his customs, habits, beliefs, philosophy, way of life, and reactions to the incidents and pressures in his environment." Because folklore is being created today as it was a hundred years ago, American Negro Folklore contains a good deal of contemporary material, including songs and writings from the Negro revolution of the 1960's. In all, this is a wonderfully readable collection and a significant source for understanding the black man's experience in America.

A massive and comprehensive work, which "presents a well-rounded social history of the African-American, and demonstrates very graphically, in each of its eight sections, the close relationship between folklore and orthodox history."
