Hardbound. Red cloth with yellow, color-illustrated dustj acket. 108 pp., color frontispiece and 48 bw plates illustrating almost 100 pieces. "Starts with a lively reminder of the importance of fairgrounds in the social history of Britain and continues with a lighthearted survey of the main themes portrayed by the fairings. Descriptions follow which help in the identification of the types of design employed by the principal maker and by imitators in five other factories. Dating the pieces is assisted by studies of the maker's marks, by the fashions and events portrayed and by tracing the themes or designs back to music-hall song covers, pictures and topical events." (dj) Includes an alphabetical index to titles at the rear. G (exlibrary with pocket and stamps on ffep, dj has wear and some soiling; interior quite nice).
