Cover is about good ; clean, complete and solid, showing some light wear here and there, a few water stain ( ?) on front board, and a light fading to gilt lettering on spine. Interior is good or better ; clean, complete and solidly bound, showing rare small and light stains, a long inscription on ffep, endpaper cracked at hinges (only the paper). The folding map is excellent showing only two very small tears to right edge. A very scarce book.

James Bruce of Kinnaird (1730-1794) beschreibt darin seine Entdeckungsreise zu den Quellen des Blauen Nil und eröffnet damit die neuere Äthiopien-Forschung. Sein ausführlicher Bericht wurde von der zeitgenössischen Kritik zunächst mit Unglauben aufgenommen und erst später durch andere Reiseberichte bestätigt. "Das Werk erschien dann 1790, fand breiteste Aufnahme und wurde sogleich ins Deutsche und Französische übersetzt . Über vielerlei Gegenstände verbreitet sich das Werk: über die Geschichte Äthiopiens von der Frühzeit bis zum Jahr 1769, auf Grund neuer, im Lande gesammelter Dokumente, über ethnographische und Handels-Fragen, über Sitten und Bräuche der Äthiopier, über den Nil und die Nil-Quellen-Frage, über die portugiesischen Berichte, über Tiere und Pflanzen . " (Henze). Band 5 abweichend gebunden (etwas größer im Format) und hinterlegtem Ausschnitt auf dem Titel (wohl ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar), Einbände teils stärker berieben und bestoßen und mit Defekten des Überzugspapiers, Rückenschild des 1. Bandes fehlt, Vorwortseiten des 1. Bandes mit Randbeschädigung am oberen weißen Rand, Tafeln teils etwas fleckig (Text fleckenfrei), Karte im 5. Band fehlt.

Since the publication, however the accuracy of his Abyssinian travels was later confirmed by other explorers.Each volume is bound without the half-title. In a full rebacked calf binding. Externally, worn and rubbed with some marks to the boards and spines. Rear board of Volume III is detached but present. Bumping to the extremities resulting in some loss of leather. Spines are a little faded. Loss and lifting to the head and tail of the spines. Crack to the head and tail of the rear joint of Volume I, and to the head of the joints of Volume II. Large crack to the head of the front joint of Volume III, front hinge is weak. Hinges of Volume I are weak. Rear hinge of Volume II is strained. Hinges of Volume IV are strained. Front hinge of Volume V is weak, rear hinge is strained. Rear board of Volume I may detach, even with careful handling. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and spotted. Folding maps to Volume V are age-toned and spotted, with edge wear, chips, and closed tears, as well as a few repairs. Good Only. book.
