Includes a detailed appendix. Written by Thomas Brydson, a Scottish cleric and writer. Previously held in the library of Rupert Alexander Alec Smith, an English historian who founded the Georgian School for East Yorkshire and served with the Green Howards in Cyprus during the Second World War. Bound in half calf with brown cloth binding. Externally sound with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Front board detached, rear joint starting but firm. Loss to the head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription to preface page. Previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper. Fair. book.

Engraved title leaf, xvi + 319 + (1)pp. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, a little worn at head of spine and outer corners. Jill Allibone?s copy, with her bookplate. Earlier ink ownership inscription of ?C.C.W.D.?.

Acceptable - First Edition quarter leather binding with marbled boards and five recessed cords on the spine and rough cut pages, xvi, 319 pages. A lot of wear to the extremities of the boards, head and tail of the leather spine is frayed and thinning at the outer hinge of the front board, front paste down has been partially removed (exposing hand writing underneath), previous owners name on the ffep with a hand written description of the work, pages are mildly tanned, binding is reasonable but for the week hinge of the front board, light annotation on a few pages, fully paginated with all the pages present and correct.

The boards are clad in brown buckram , the spine divided into six divisions with the title " Brydson's Heraldry" in gilt on a red background in the second from the top. A previous owner's bookplate can be found on the verso of the front board. Internally, the title page, verso of the last page, and first page of four containing the list of subscribers, show some age browning as do all edges of the text block. Beyond that, all seems clean. This appears to be a rebind with endpapers and pastedowns also having been replaced. The book is in VG plus condition.
