Büsser verfasste die massgebliche Biographie Bullingers (Heinrich Bullinger,1504-1575: Leben, Werk und Wirkung. 2 Bde., Zürich 2004-05) - Der bedeutende Zürcher Kirchenmann Heinrich Bullinger verfasste als Hauptwerke eine 'Historie gemeiner loblicher Eydtgnoschaft' und die Reformationschronik, die als einzige der beiden gedruckt wurde. Nach ihr "ist der Historiker Bullinger zu beurteilen. Er ist ein guter Erzähler, schildert zum Beispiel die Schlacht von Kappel sehr anschaulich. [.] Sein Zweck ist ein apologetischer; wiederholt betont er, dass er Unwahrheiten widerlegen wolle. Er gibt nur die Reformation in der Schweiz [.]. Die Parallelen in Deutschland stellt er nicht dar, mit Ausnahme des Bauernkriegs von 1525. Dagegen geht er auf die Vorgänge in Italien ein, bemerkt manchenorts, dass die italienischen Feldzüge den Bürgerkrieg unterbanden, kennt also die internationalen Zusammenhänge. Der neuerdings gegen Bullinger erhobene Vorwurf, er stelle die Entwicklung so dar, als ob die schweizerische Reformation unabhängig von der deutschen entstanden sei, trifft nicht ihn, sondern Zwingli, der das stets behauptete; dies gab ja auch den Anlass zum Zwist zwischen Luther und Zwingli. Bullinger benützt Quellen von allen Seiten [.]. [.] Sein Standpunkt ist natürlich reformiert, einseitig und doch relativ gerecht. Zwar gebraucht er kräftige Ausdrücke gegen die Widersacher, [.] schmäht sie aber nicht, wie es der Brauch war. Er vertuscht auch nicht durchgehends. Von schlimmen Sachen unterdrückt er nur eine, die Hinrichtung Wehrlis, die ein Justizmord war.
