The true name of pretty Cloud is withheld becasue of her expressed wish, while the name of James Butler was his true name. The part he played in the Custer Battle (The Battle of the Little Big Horn) is a fact. The Frontispiece is a photograph of a few of the old Indians who took part in the Custer Battle. Also included is a map showing territory where the Custer Battle occurred, and the routes taken by the United States troops. CONDITION: The lower corner of the book cover has been bent on this used book.

A historical novelette - based on real people involved in the Little Big Horn. Pretty Cloud's name is not used becasue of her expressed wish to the author, while the name of 1st Sergeant James Butler of La Company was used. The part he played in the Battle of the Little Big Horn is a fact. Included is a frontispiece photo of a few of the Indians who took part at the Little Big Horn along with with author (with handwritten names below each). The map shows movement of the troops and the different Indian factions. A fairly uncommon collectible item.

Presentation on ffep from Burdick to Indian & regional history historian Alexis A. Praus. Praus wrote at least two books on the Sioux, including a bio of Sitting Bull. Burdick was a North Dakota legislator. The Intro states that Burdick examined papers containing these three chapters several years following McLaughlin's death. "There is no question but what these chapters throw additional light on the many stirring events relating to the Sioux Trouble on Grand River in 1890, ." Chapters: "Sitting Bull's Death Aftermath", "How Hawkman Rode To His Death", "Shave Heads Code of Honor." Vg condition with 1 1/2" tear at bottom of front cover closed. Light stain in center of title page; noticeable but does not keep this copy from being a collector's copy unless perfection is required. Very scarce.

In 1931, Burdick discovered the missing chapters that had been cut by the original publisher. This volume includes those missing chapters. Scarce.

As a young man he drove cattle from Oregon to Wyoming a couple of times before remaining in Wyoming. At the age of 26, he became a ranch manager for the Marquis de Mores in the Medora area of the Dakota territory. "Goodall was associated with the Marquis de Mores for a number of years in charge of his cattle and cattle ranches in which capacity he became well acquainted with Theodore Roosevelt."---Graff 478. Herd 360 says "John Goodall was Teddy Roosevelt's ranch foreman." A noteworthy biography. A fine, clean copy.
