Hardcover. Etat : Good. Limited Edition. DESCRIPTION: Limited edition, this copy being 230/320, with only 300 made available for sale. 15.5 x 10.5 inches. Heavily illustrated, unpaginated, 160 pages, (80 leafs) not including the free end papers. Quarter bound beige cloth, and green paper bound boards. Top edge gilt, other edges rough-cut. Printed on heavy beige paper. A small label stating Diocesan Book Room, 1461 University Road Montreal attached to the front pastedown, and the limited-edition number faintly written in pencil on the free endpaper. ----- CONDITION: Pages are clean and unmarked, showing mild tanning to the extremities. Book has been cracked open, with very shallow gutter cracks. Joints and hinges are strong. Several bumps to the edges of the cover boards with some loss of paper to the corners of the boards and scattered losses along the front and back edges. 1 x 1 inch loss of cloth to the spine at the tail, and a 1-inch closed tear of the cloth to the top along the joint. Another 3-inch surface tear to cloth cover on the spine, not affecting the strength of the joints. ----- ABOUT THIS TITLE: Scots Ballads, by the Scottish artist Robert Burns (1869-1941), also known as Limner (illustrator), to be distinguished from the poet, is a captivating collection, that contains five Scots ballads, namely The wyfe of Usher's well', Helen of Kirkconnel, Sir Patric Spens, The twa corbies, and The cruelle sister. Each ballad is accompanied by illustrations and illumination. The illustrations and text within the book blend elements from various artistic movements, namely Arts and Crafts known for its emphasis on craftsmanship and natural forms. Number 225 of 325 copies printed, on thick parchment, unpaginated. 80 leaves in total, with calligraphic text on 72 pages (some verso pages being blank) comprising a preface by Burns, the text of five ballads in Gothic Black Letter enriched with illustrative motifs, and a glossary. There are also 39 full page illustrations. The title page is in red and black, all other pages in black, beautifully printed. This copy has some wear to corners and head and tail of spine, some spotting to cloth of spine and uneven tanning to front endpaper, Internally very sound and clean, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Robert Burns HRSA, RSW (1869?1941), often referred to as Limner (a painter of ornament) to distinguish him from the poet, was a painter and designer and an exponent of the Art Nouveau style in Scotland. He attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art before going on to study in London and Paris. He served for many years as President of the Scottish Society of Artists, and was elected Honorary Academician at the Royal Scottish Academy.
