Publisher's cloth, front cover decorated, gilt lettering on spine, boards worn and faded; new endpapers, interior good. First American edition. The author documents his observations of the people and region. This work describes the culture, land, customs, animals and a number of the region's little known native tribes such as the Maigoes, Azande, Mabode, Mongvus, Ababwas and Mangettou. With illustrations from photographs and sketches by the author. Burrows (1861-1912), a British army officer, served as a District Commander in the Congo Free State.

Stanley, bound in green cloth lettered and decorated in black, edges lightly rubbed, library stamped to front paste-do wn, small stamp very cleanly removed from spine otherwise a very good copy. Although many stories have been written about the African Congo, the author writes about his experiences and about the place he visited where no other white man had gone.

Second impression. 8vo. Original navy blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and sky blue. A very good copy of an uncommon book, with a little wear to the edges. Ownership inscription to half-title. Illustrated with 140 photographic reproductions and black and white maps, with a folding colour map to the rear. A vehement parting shot at the administration of The Congo Free State, in particular revealing its use of violence and economic exploitation, written by a former district commissioner there during the final years of Leopold II's direct rule.
