Corners scuffed and chipped with a little loss, spine scuffed and split with some loss to head, gutter cracked at p.86 and front hinge cracked, owner details to prelims, pp clean and bright. Size: 8vo.

A selection of 497 fables from some 32 fabulists with engraved illustrations by the French illustrator and caricaturist, J.J. Grandville. A handsomely bound copy. A very good copy with some light spotting and rubbing to the leather spine. The text is good with some scattered foxing and spotting. The frontispiece is quite wrinkled with some heavy foxing in the margin.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair-Good. First British edition. Quarto. XXXIV, [2], 352pp. Contemporary 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece. Illustrated head-, tail chapters, and initials. Delightful work being an homage to the Fable genre, with text from Aesop, La Fontaine, Nivernois, Lessing, Dodsley, Gay, Croxall, Yriarte, Goldsmith, Florian, Addison, Sir Roger L'Estrange, and others. The charm of the various fables is greatly heightened by the numerous in-text and full-page illustrations engraved from the designs of Grandville. Age wear on binding with spine and edges heavily rubbed, with abrasion to leather. Title, and presentation page creased at upper corner. Moderate age toning along paper margin. Binding in overall poor to fair, interior in good, plates in good+ to very good condition.

The illustrations come from Grandville's Fables of La Fontaine, published in France the previous year. Fine.
